Reading Trichomes: A Visual Guide to Harvest Timing

Blog·December 5, 2024· 5 min read

Forget calendar-based harvest schedules. Trichomes tell the real story. Here is how to read them accurately and harvest at peak potency every time.

Seed-to-harvest timelines are marketing estimates — not biological guarantees. Phenotype variation, environment, and feeding strategy all shift the actual finish date. The only reliable harvest indicator is what is happening in the trichomes themselves.

The Tool You Need

At minimum, a 60x–100x handheld jeweler's loupe. For serious inspection, a digital microscope (30x–60x) that connects to your phone is a significant upgrade — you can capture images over time and compare maturation day by day.

Reading Trichome Color

Clear / Translucent

The trichome is still producing and not yet at peak. THC is still being synthesized. Harvesting now means underdeveloped potency and a more racy, anxious effect profile. Never harvest at this stage.

Cloudy / Milky White

The trichome head is full and opaque. THC is at or near its maximum concentration. This is the window for the clearest, most energetic effect. Many sativa and sativa-dominant strains are best harvested here.

Amber

THC is beginning to degrade to CBN. Amber trichomes indicate a more sedative, body-heavy effect. Most indica and hybrid strains benefit from 10–20% amber mixed with mostly cloudy trichomes for a balanced profile.

A Practical Harvest Guide

  • Maximum effect / energetic: Harvest at 90–100% cloudy, 0–5% amber
  • Balanced effect: 70–80% cloudy, 10–20% amber
  • Sedative / relaxing: 50% cloudy, 30–40% amber

Common Mistake

Reading trichomes on sugar leaves rather than the bud itself. Sugar leaf trichomes mature faster than calyx trichomes. Always inspect the calyxes at the top of the main bud for the most accurate reading.
