pH Management in Coco Coir: The Numbers That Actually Matter

Blog·December 20, 2024· 6 min read

Coco coir rewards precision. A narrow pH window is non-negotiable. We walk through why, and how to maintain it across every stage of growth.

Coco coir has become the substrate of choice for many serious cannabis cultivators — and for good reason. Its excellent aeration, water retention, and near-inert chemical nature give growers precise control over nutrition. But that control comes with a requirement: pH must be managed with far more precision than in soil.

Why pH Matters More in Coco

Unlike living soil, which contains buffering microbial life that can partially compensate for pH swings, coco is largely inert. The roots depend entirely on the nutrient solution you provide. If pH is off, nutrients become chemically unavailable regardless of what is in your reservoir — a condition called nutrient lockout.

The Correct pH Range for Coco

Target 5.8–6.2 pH at the feed solution. Many experienced coco growers drift their pH in a range — feeding at 5.8 one day, 6.2 the next — to ensure uptake of both iron (better absorbed at lower pH) and calcium/magnesium (better absorbed at higher pH).

Micro vs. Macro Availability by pH

  • Nitrogen: 5.5–6.5 (broad range)
  • Phosphorus: 5.8–6.2 (narrow — pH here is critical)
  • Potassium: 6.0–7.0
  • Calcium: 6.2–7.0 (goes unavailable below 6.0)
  • Magnesium: 6.0–7.0
  • Iron: 5.5–6.5 (highest below 6.2)

How to Maintain pH Stability

  • Mix nutrients first, then pH adjust — never the reverse
  • Use a calibrated digital pH meter, not strips
  • Calibrate your meter weekly with 4.0 and 7.0 solutions
  • Check runoff pH — chronic drift above 6.5 indicates calcium/magnesium buildup
  • Flush when EC runoff exceeds feed EC by more than 20%

The Most Common Mistake

Adjusting pH up or down in large jumps. pH adjusters are powerful — a few extra drops can swing your solution by a full point. Always add pH up or down a drop at a time, mix thoroughly, and recheck before adjusting further.
