Curing 101: Why Most Growers Rush the Most Important Step

The cure transforms good cannabis into exceptional cannabis. This guide covers the science behind curing and the exact protocols used by top cultivators.

You harvested, dried, and trimmed. Your buds look great and smell incredible. Now comes the step most growers underestimate — the cure. The cure is not optional. It is where good cannabis becomes exceptional cannabis.

The Science Behind Curing

Freshly dried cannabis still contains residual chlorophyll and other organic compounds that produce a harsh, green taste. During curing, enzymatic and bacterial processes break down these compounds while slowly releasing residual moisture from the inner bud structure. The result is smoother smoke and enhanced terpene expression.

The Drying Phase

Before curing begins, buds must be properly dried. Target 10–14 days at 60–65°F and 55–60% RH. Never rush this with excessive heat — fast drying destroys terpenes and produces a harsh product. Buds are ready to jar when small stems snap cleanly rather than bend.

The Curing Protocol

Week 1–2: Active Cure

  • Fill jars 75% — never pack them tight
  • Store at 60–65°F, 58–62% RH in complete darkness
  • Open (burp) jars twice daily for 15–20 minutes
  • Check for ammonia smell — this indicates too much moisture; leave lids off longer

Week 3–4: Passive Cure

  • Reduce burping to once daily
  • Maintain same temperature and humidity
  • Terpene profile continues to develop and deepen
  • Many strains peak around the 4–6 week mark

Long-Term Storage (6+ Weeks)

For long-term storage, target 55–58% RH and cool, dark conditions. Properly cured and stored cannabis maintains quality for 12–18 months. Use 62% Boveda or Integra packs for consistency.

One Rule

Spend weeks growing it. Give it weeks to cure. The patience you show in the jar directly reflects in the jar.
